Delphos, Kansas

I found this image of a one-room schoolhouse in Delphos, Kansas on Facebook. The clothes, the wagon, the building would suggest a date circa 1890. I tried to restore some detail to the faces, but there isn’t much to work with.

Delphos, Kansas

Delphos

Delphos (Greek mythology), the son of Apollo. Delphi and the Oracle of Delphi are named for him. Various sites say Delphos was named for Delphos, Ohio as W. A. Kiser was from Ohio. No doubt, Kiser was also aware of Greek mythology and found the fertile land east of the Solomon River between two creeks heaven on earth.

From William G. Cutler’s History of the State of Kansas, 1883:

“Delphos is a flourishing town of about 400 inhabitants, … twelve miles northwest of Minneapolis, in the Solomon Valley, and on the line of the Solomon Valley Railroad. The town has a very pleasant location, one half of a mile from the river, not low, nor over-elevated, but occupying a happy medium. The town site was laid out by W. A. Kiser on his land in 1869-’70, but the town did not commence to assume the proprotions [sic] of a village even, until 1878, when the prospect of a railroad became a certainty. The Solomon Valley Railroad reached the town in October, 1879. During 1879-’80, Delphos grew … rapidly … The business and residence portions of the town suggest a much older place, it having a larger number of good buildings than most towns .. its size …. Considering its size, it is the best business point in the county. The surrounding country is fertile and quite well settled, which makes Delphos an extensive grain and stock market.”

The town had several general stores selling merchandise, a hardware store, the Pacific House that could handle 20 guests, a druggist, a livery, and a flour mill.

Cutler’s description of the Delphos schoolhouse, in 1883:

“The public school of Delphos, which is now graded [presumably, meaning classes for students of differing ages], is in good condition. The town has been very unfortunate with its school-houses. The hurricane of the 9th of June, 1879, destroyed one. Another was destroyed by fire. The money for building the present house was loaned the district by the citizens. It is a good two-story building, with belfrey and bell, and supplied with excellent furniture.”

By 1905, Delphos had a grade school and high school. Kansas Memory. It is also possible this is a nearby rural schoolhouse.

  1. Seems unusual that all of the children are in dark clothing. I have several school pictures of my family members from the same time period. The children are in quite individualized clothing, though ones from same family seem to have look-alike dresses. Most boys in overalls of varied descriptions.

    • I suspect that this was an end of semester/year photo where everyone wore their Sunday best. I also guess this is cultural. Danes, Norwegians and Swedes had a dominant Protestant ethic. In most town and city photos prior to 1900, men go about in suits, ties and hats, women in long dresses. It must have very uncomfortable during hot Kansas summers.
