The Ottawa Herald newspaper was founded by Warren Anderson and Harrison Tone, of Zenia, Ohio. They published their first issue on December 6, 1869. The newspaper changed its name to the Kansas Liberal in 1872 and was edited by John Hewitt. The Liberal supported the unsuccessful candidacy of Horace Greeley in the presidential election of 1872. In 1873, the paper’s name gave way to the Ottawa Daily Republican and became the dominant county paper.
